ANNOUNCEMENT Mrs Galf has been badly unwell for the last few weeks, making it impossible for me to update this website. When she is back to normal, the website will soon be the same. In the meantime here is a recycling to keep things on the move….

One earned an ‘R’ (for Runaway) in the ship’s muster book by being overdue back from leave, called a run ashore in this case, which was usually a short leave on a foreign station (leave at home ports was rare, because desertion was more likely). Actually, desertion was less of a problem than popular fiction would lead us to believe, although late return from a run ashore (called being ‘adrift’) was always favourite with some.
