Every day, the decks of a warship were scrubbed and holystoned (see Naval Stuff page (previously called Dictiopaedia)), then flogged dry, before the watch below were called at start of day.

It is not the exclusive right of seamen to consider that they are dumped upon from a great height by those that consider themselves superior (even if they are, as in the case of the ship’s officers – if only in rank!), but is an opinion shared by many workers.
