Here we see our heroes at their mess table.  Fungus is a messmate of Abie and Os, who enjoys many skills not shared by them.  Anyone who knows Galf will recognise Fungus.  The other messmate with the droopy head is Droopy – more about him in future cartoon strips.

‘Tiddley’ is a sailor’s expression for ‘just right’, used to express satisfaction with a job well done, or as an instruction describing how something should be finished to be acceptable.  ‘Perfect’ is just about tiddley; ‘that will do’ is not.

The comment about having to break the bottle to let Abie out is, of course, ridiculous – they really would never have let him out.
