Are explanations really necessary?  Okay, in the first scene Abie is climbing aboard the Old Barky Sarky by using the side entry steps.  And the time referred to is eight o’clock in the evening – and if you need that to be verified then look up ‘Watches’ and ‘Bells’ in the Naval Stuff page.  And you should be ashamed of yourself if you are a navy type.  Of course, if you are a lay fan, then sorry about that outburst and welcome to my world.
