We find Abie and Os together with their messmates Fungus and Droopy at a funeral at sea.

If a seaman was lucky enough to die at a quiet time (as distinct from during battle or storm, etc.) he would be sewn into his hammock with a couple of cannon balls at his feet and the last stitch through his nose (which would wake him up if he was just dozing), and be buried at sea with due ceremony.  However, if he died during battle, or even looked injured enough as to be unlikely to survive for long, he would be unceremoniously ditched overboard to give munjy to the fishes, rather than trip someone else up by lying about the deck whilst they were probably pre-occupied.
