Escape Goat
This cartoon strip was first published in WARSHIPS International Fleet Review magazine in May 2012.
Many ships carried livestock, especially goats, which were kept for their milk – a luxury enjoyed by the captain, who did not often find there was enough to offer to other members of the crew. Of course, goats are noted for their omnivorous digestion, making them ideal on board where the diet may be unadventurous, and could even include the captain’s ‘baccy’ on occasions.
Jemmy Ducks was a popular name for the crew-member given responsibility for the livestock, of whatever breed.
